Must-see attractions while studying in Sydney
Sydney is officially one of the most spectacular cities in the world. Well-known for her fantastic weather, sunny disposition and natural beauty, it’s no surprise that over 200,000 international students flock here to study every year. As well as providing world-leading educational institutions, Sydney is also brimming with iconic landmarks and cultural gems that are well connected by a comprehensive public transport system. If you’re studying in Sydney and thinking about what to do next, here’s those city attractions you simply should not miss.
1. Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge
Nothing says Sydney quite like the elegant sails of the Sydney Opera House, an architectural marvel that sits elegantly at the mouth of Sydney Harbour. This UNESCO world heritage building plays host to over 1,600 performances every year ranging from ballet and drama through to opera and musical theatre. Get the inside track on a daily tour, or take in a show for a truly immersive experience. And when you’re done, there’s nothing more special than that postcard view of the famed Harbour Bridge. One of the world’s largest steel arch bridges, the affectionately named ‘Coathanger’ quickly connects the city to northern Sydney and is well used by cars, bikes and pedestrians alike.
Good to know:
Access student-friendly ticket pricing at the Opera House, or treat yourself to incredible views of the city from the Harbour Bridge’s Pylon Lookout – completely free of charge! All less than 3km from Iglu Central Park or Iglu Broadway.
2. Bondi Beach
Think Sydney, think beaches, think Bondi Beach. Located in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs and just 45 minutes away from Iglu Central, this waterside haven is constantly brimming with students, locals and tourists alike. But don’t let the crowds put you off, because Bondi’s not just the domain of pro surfers and boogie boarders. In fact, there’s plenty more going on here than hanging 10 off your long board. Sun baking, shopping, dining and people-watching are all top-rated activities around this beachy suburb. Take in the many incredible vistas available on the Bondi-Coogee coastal walk, spot some winter whales passing through and explore the neighbouring areas. You won’t leave disappointed.
Good to know:
Trains go directly to Bondi Junction from Central Station, where a quick 15 min bus ride will have you sat on the beach!
3. Taronga Zoo
If you had to pick just one Zoo in the world to visit, it has to be Taronga. With a stunning location right on the shores of Sydney Harbour, this is the perfect place to get up close and personal with some of Australia’s finest citizens. Think koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and more. Meet the new arrivals, check out the seal show, spot the elusive platypus and learn from the wisdom of the zookeepers. Don’t forget to ride the cable car right from the bottom of the zoo up to the top for more spectacular views of the Harbour Bridge and animals. Legend tells that those lucky giraffes live on some of the most expensive real estate in the city!
Good to know:
Taronga Zoo is just a 12-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay – ask for student concession rates on entry and make the most of your day.
4. The Rocks
As the birthplace of modern Sydney, The Rocks’ rich colonial heritage is well-preserved. Nestled just underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge and featuring old cobblestone streets, quaint buildings and historic laneways, this atmospheric precinct gives us a fascinating glimpse into Sydney’s history from when the convicts first arrived in 1788. Today, old meets new with heritage designs and sandstone buildings rubbing shoulders with innovative entertainment venues. The area heaves with tourists and locals alike, all enjoying cosy restaurants, welcoming pubs and artisan shops along with the popular open-air weekend market. Here you can stock up on locally designed crafts, unique homewares, jewellery, clothing and more. Chow down on delicious street food, enjoy the live beats and soak up the city vibe. You’re only ever footsteps away from Circular Quay, that stunning harbour view and the hustle of the CBD – and all less than 45 minutes from your Iglu accommodation.
Good to know:
Check out the nearby Museum of Contemporary Art, a space that’s completely dedicated to local and international modern art, with many exhibitions free of charge.
5. The Royal Botanic Gardens
If you’re craving some fresh air and want to escape the hustle of the city streets, there’s no better retreat than Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Established back in 1816, it is one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens and is home to a vast collection of native and exotic plants. Take a leisurely stroll through the spectacular grounds, explore the succulent gardens, take a bush tucker tour or step into a rainforest wonderland. Or simply take a rug and a book and enjoy the fantastic water views, complete with the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in your sights. Sydney living simply doesn’t get any better!
