Stretch your legs

With the weather cooling down it’s easy to go into hibernation but it’s one of the best times to get out, stretch your legs and explore some of the many amazing walks Sydney has to offer. The great thing about walking in Sydney is that you don’t have to go far to get away from the hustle and bustle and feel like you’re a million miles away. Here are just a few ideas to keep you busy close to home or further afield…

Walks around Chatswood

Artarmon to Middle Harbour Iglu Chatswood residents can easily jump on a train to Artarmon as the walk starts at the station and follows Flat Rock Creek Valley through Artarmon Reserve, Bicentennial Park and Flat Rock Gully Reserve to Middle Harbour. Along the way you can read stories and see photos of historical interest on large poles.Click here for more details

Blue Gum Reserve Walking Tracks You start this walk in Chatswood West and finish in the lush Lane Cove National Park. The walk features the remains of the Blue Gum High Forest, which once covered the North Shore ridge where the Pacific Highway now runs, and is now listed as an endangered ecological community. Click here for more details

Railway to River Walk Start at Chatswood Train Station and end up at the lovely Lane Cove River. Just follow the signs and you will pass through streets, gully rainforests, woodland and riverside plant communities. Sturdy shoes are recommended for this one. Click here for more details

And a little further afield on the north

Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach This one is quite cool. You can jump on a ferry to Taronga Zoo and then disappear into the rustic bush track that weaves it’s way around Bradley’s Head across Clifton Gardens up to Middle Head and then finally down to beautiful Balmoral Beach. Click here for more details

Spit Bridge to Manly (or vice versa) Now this is a good walk to stretch your legs – about 10kms of stretching all up. It covers some mixed terrain, including a walk along Clontarf beach, rocky stairs and cool coastal cliffs, and offers lots of awesome views of Middle Harbour and out to the Pacific Ocean.

And for those after something in the east

Bondi to Bronte (and beyond) If you haven’t already done this one, it really is worth doing. It might get busy but the ocean views and people watching make up for it. Plus, it’s easy to get to regardless of where you start and you can always stop for a quick nap on one of the famous beaches along the way.

Rose Bay to Watson’s Bay (including the Hermitage Foreshore track) A little less ‘famous’ than the Bondi to Bronte walk but just as picturesque. The ‘Hermitage Foreshore Scenic Walk’ takes you past a collection of little harbour beaches and Strickland House, all the while providing spectacular views of the city, Opera House and Harbour Bridge, before.Click here for more details

And the best bit, a sunny Sydney winter’s day is the perfect time to do these walks – clear, crisp and not too hot. So now is there is no excuse for hibernating this winter. Happy walking!
