5 of the best day trips from Sydney

When the weekend is here and you’re ready to break up the grind, Sydney has you covered. From beaches and hikes to island retreats, there’s a whole lot more to explore just outside the city limits. And with so many options just a day trip away, there really are no excuses. Here’s what you need to know.

1. Royal National Park

The second oldest National Park in the world after America’s Yellowstone, there’s bush walks, swim spots, beaches and more – all just an hour away from the bustle of the CBD. Accessible by car, or a train and ferry combo, the park is open all year round and is a little slice of pure paradise just south of the city. Walk a portion of the iconic Coast Walk, gaze from afar at Wedding Cake Rock, paddle in the Figure Eight Rock Pools or simply relax on a hidden beach and watch for the splash of a humpback whale. It’s the perfect way to restore energy and inhale that fresh coastal air.

2. Blue Mountains

This world heritage-listed area is a popular Sydney escape for tourists and locals alike – which will come as no surprise once you see those breathtaking views. From the majestic Three Sisters to Bridal Veil Falls and beyond, there’s Insta-worthy frames everywhere you look. Thrill-seekers will love the hair-raising scenic railway down the Jamison Valley. The mountains are known for evoking a distinctive blue haze which actually led to their prompt renaming. The blue colour actually stems from the eucalyptus oil droplets that combine with dust and water vapour and scatter light. Accessible by train direct from Central Station to Katoomba, this is one day trip that’s not to be missed.

3. Dangar Island

Quietly tucked away on the Hawkesbury River and just an hour out of town, Dangar Island is possible Sydney’s best-kept secret. Accessible only by ferry from Brooklyn, this little enclave is rich in natural and indigenous history and offers spectacular views of the water. Spend a couple of hours taking a peaceful stroll around the entire island, discover the Aboriginal cave and rock art, dine at the Bowling Club or swim at Bradleys’ Beach. And with no cars allowed on the island, it’s the perfect getaway to calm your mind and shake off the worries of the day.

4. Kangaroo Valley

Just 2 hours travel by car south of the city, and you’re immediately transported away to the heart of the country. Home to rolling hills, wandering cattle, roaming wallabies and friendly llamas, the Kangaroo River is also one of the main attractions. Bushwalk to Fitzroy Falls and watch the water plunge more than 80 metres into the Yarrunga Valley, discover the region’s colonial past on the Historic Village Walk and indulge yourself with a famous Village pie. Spend a bit longer and kayak down the river or stop for tea in Berry on the way home. This rural charm might be a world away from the Sydney streets, but it’s definitely close enough to do in a day.

5. Manly Beach

This is one of those experiences where the journey is just as good as the destination. Grab your togs and a towel and hop on the famous green and yellow Manly Ferry at Circular Quay. This 20-minute journey takes in the very best of Sydney as you go, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge jostling for position against the sparkling blue water and sunny skies. And if the sun’s on a break, simply enjoy the spectacular views that stretch across this natural harbour. When you arrive, the world is your oyster. From surfing and swimming to snorkelling and paddle-boarding, Manly Beach simply has something for everyone. And when you’ve had enough of the beach, browse the local shops and markets, grab your fish n’ chips and a gelato, and listen to the sounds of the waves before jumping on the ferry back home. Absolute bliss.
