How to stay fit on a student budget

Staying on top of your health and fitness can be a real challenge for uni students, but it’s an important part of the equation that has multiple benefits. The good news about studying in Australia is that you have the weather firmly on your side. So, before you blow up the budget by splurging out on an expensive gym membership, let’s take a look at some free or low-cost ways to stay fighting fit right where you are.
Why your fitness matters
Regular exercise has been directly linked to improved academic performance, with the increased blood flow to the brain enhancing memory, attention and recall. It also helps to improve your sleep patterns and reduce the build-up of stress and anxiety. This makes it much easier for students to stay academically motivated and resist procrastination. If you’re struggling to find time to exercise, focus on organising your study in the most time effective way so that its built into the schedule from the start.
Budget-friendly fitness ideas
Walking/Hiking
It might sound obvious, but life as a student can be pretty stationary. If you’re not sitting at a desk, you might be travelling to and from uni on a train or bus, which means you’re really not getting much natural movement into your day. Try getting off public transport a few stops early, or make time to take a short stroll every day to break up your study sessions. The more enthusiastic walkers can invest in some hiking boots and take advantage of the great Aussie outdoors. Pack your hat, sunscreen and water, and you’re good to go!
Cycling
Australia is a country of cyclists, and every city boasts a comprehensive network of trails and bike paths that criss-cross the urban landscape. In bike-friendly cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, consider investing in a reliable second-hand bike if you don’t already own one and use it to get yourself around. Not only will you save loads on fares – you’ll get fit at the same time.
Swimming
Are you even in Australia if you haven’t splashed around in the ocean? Students lucky enough to live nearby can take advantage of these giant free swimming pools and get those fitness endorphins soaring. Bigger beaches usually have enclosed ocean pools that are set up for lap training – and it’s all completely free of charge!
Uni sports teams
Keeping fit with friends is one of the best ways to look after your health. Uni teams are usually free to join, and you get to play some fun sport, hang out with mates, and meet new friends at the same time!
Online workouts
Thanks to the rise of fitness influencers, there are literally millions of workout videos to choose from on YouTube, and it won’t cost a cent. You can try out yoga, HIIT training, cardio or strength, maybe trial some Pilates or even just hit up a dance routine. Head to the park, stay in your room or round up some friends…. The options are endless.
Hill training
This type of movement is really good for strengthening your muscles and improving your cardio fitness levels. If you live in a hilly city, you can take full advantage of the natural environment. If not, try just out the stairs in your uni buildings for the same effect!
