Cool things to do in Brisbane for students

Brisbane is a top spot for students—laid-back, friendly, and packed with things to do. Whether you’re into late-night eats, catching gigs, hitting the beach, or just soaking up city life, there’s always something happening. And if you’re living at Iglu Brisbane City or Iglu Kelvin Grove, you’re already winning with everything right on your doorstep.

Eat, drink, and chill in the laneways

Forget the usual food courts—Brisbane’s laneways are where it’s at. Spencer Lane is packed with cool spots to grab a bite, while Albert Lane has that modern city vibe. Burnett Lane is one of the oldest laneways in Brisbane and a local fave. With hidden bars and a whole lot of character, it’s only five minutes from the city centre (and Iglu Brisbane City) and is perfect for unwinding after uni.

Get the best views (and some Insta content)

Take a break between classes and jump on the free tour of the Brisbane City Hall Clock Tower—it’s a quick trip and worth it for the views. Or head to the Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank for a stunning sunset ride. For something even more chill, hop on a CityCat ferry, kick back, and see the city from the river.

Feed your creative side

QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art) is a must for anyone into art, design, or just looking for inspiration for your next assignment. It’s only 20 minutes from the city centre and constantly switching up its exhibitions. Over in Kelvin Grove, check out La Boite Theatre for cutting-edge performances that’ll shake up your idea of what theatre can be.

Escape the hustle (without going far)

Need to reset? Roma Street Parklands is perfect for a study break—sprawl on the grass, walk through the gardens, or grab a coffee and chill. The Botanic Gardens, just minutes from Iglu Brisbane City, is another peaceful hangout spot. Near Kelvin Grove, Victoria Park/Barrambin is a great spot to hit the driving range, play a round of mini golf, or simply unwind.

Get on your bike

Brisbane is made for cycling. With heaps of bike lanes and riverside paths, it’s an easy (and cheap) way to get around. You can bring your own bike or rent one from various local hire companies and docking stations across the city. Bonus: Iglu properties give you easy access to some great bike routes.

Beach day, anyone?

When the sun’s out (which is most days), South Bank’s man-made beach is a fun and easy option. If you’re feeling more adventurous, use your go card and hop on a train or bus to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast. Both are perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Moreton and Stradbroke Islands are also super popular with students for a bit of island life.

Shop smart, spend less

Need some retail therapy or just new uni gear? Queen Street Mall has everything you need, and it’s an easy walk from Iglu Brisbane City. For something more local, hit the Kelvin Grove Village Markets every Saturday for fresh produce, great coffee, and live music—it’s literally around the corner from Iglu Kelvin Grove.

Sip back in time

If you’re 18+ and into unique bars, check out The Gresham. It’s a heritage-listed venue that used to be a bank and now serves up top-notch whiskey and rum. It’s a great place to go when you’re feeling a bit fancy (without blowing your budget).

Nights out that don’t break the bank

Brisbane has plenty of student-friendly nightlife. The Menagerie in Kelvin Grove has vegan eats, great cocktails, and extended happy hours from Monday to Wednesday. In the city, you’ll find rooftop bars, live music, and places to hang whether it’s a big night out or just a casual one with your mates.

Living the student city life

Brisbane has the perfect mix of fun, convenience, and chill vibes—ideal for student living. With everything from public transport and beaches to parks and laneway bars within easy reach, you won’t run out of things to do. And with Iglu Brisbane City and Iglu Kelvin Grove as your base, it’s all just a quick walk, ride, or ferry away.
