Best student hangouts in Redfern

Redfern is pretty hard to beat when it comes to character and convenience. A quirky blend of urban progression and historic charm, students will have the pick of café culture, sourdough bakeries and more than a few welcoming drinking holes.

Located close to UTS, Sydney University, Notre Dame University and the Fashion Institute, and within strolling distance of Central Station and neighbouring gems like Surry Hills, Newtown and Eveleigh, this really is one go-to destination.

With variety on tap and plenty of buzz, there’s a hangout for everyone in Redfern.

Breadfern

Nothing says Redfern like Breadfern. Embracing the gluten-free movement along with the passion for all things sourdough, this small but boutique space has an ever-changing stash of delicious treats on the go. From seasonally inspired pastries through to lunchtime pies and artisan breads, these artisan bakers are committed to quality and taste. There’s nothing quite like perching on a crate in the sun, tucking into the flakes of a freshly baked almond croissant to set you up for a day of study.

The Tudor

If you’re more a fan of old school vibes than new age energy, The Tudor is for you. It will take you straight back to the traditional English pub scene, but with a Redfern-sized twist on the side. Think fish and chips, nachos to share, beer on tap and mid-week trivia. Add in the Tuesday Drag Bingo and there you have it. The perfect low-key spot to meet with friends, you can enjoy the courtyard space as you sup on your drinks, enjoy the live sport or simply watch the locals go by. Unpretentious and unassuming, hangouts just don’t get any better than this.

107 Projects

The creative offerings of 107 Projects go to the very heart of what Redfern is all about – inclusivity, diversity and community. This artist-led multidisciplinary space provides a platform for over 25,000 artists to create, perform and present. With flexible studio spaces, a co-working area and a rooftop garden, it really is the perfect retreat. Committed to connecting community and creating social change through representation, you can experience drama, art, storytelling and dance from both local and international artists.

Atomic Beer Project Brewery

Hotly anticipated and eagerly awaited, local enthusiasts will not want to miss out on this next level experience. Showcasing eight different beers at any one time alongside a full Asian menu to complement the big hoppy flavours, Atomic is still not done yet. Factor in the early morning coffee scene, a handy co-working space and an array of wines and spirits – and it’s the sort of place that’s difficult to leave. Perfect for a weekend hangout out or an early start – the options are endless.

Redfern Park

Soak up the sun in the heritage-listed Redfern Park, just 5 minutes’ walk away from Iglu Redfern. This one-time swampland was reimagined using cuttings from the Royal Botanic Gardens and officially opened in 1890. Home to multiple sporting activities including cricket and rugby, as well as community events and festivals, Redfern Park is considered one of the most beautiful in inner Sydney. A green oasis in urban surrounds, it’s the ideal place to take a quiet moment, get some exercise or simply breathe in the fresh air
