QUT is home to over 50,000 students and prides itself on helping graduates get real-world ready. A young university with a global outlook, it specialises in generating opportunities between students and industry through integrated placements, internships and project collaboration. QUT’s Gardens Point campus is situated in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, while the Kelvin Grove campus forms part of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a purpose-built community precinct with a strong creative focus. Fortunately, Brisbane packs a mighty punch when it comes to affordable living – here’s what all incoming QUT students need to know.

Brisbane CBD

Brisbane is certainly the quieter achiever of the city siblings, but the good news is you’ll rarely be short of things to do. Smaller, more compact and with a lower cost of living, Brisbane has a super welcoming vibe which makes it a popular study destination for students all over the world. Whilst living centrally can sometimes be a more expensive accommodation choice, it’s the perfect location for students that thrive on operating in the heart of the action. With an unbeatable transport system, plenty of green spaces and entertainment options on tap, it’s not hard to see why QUT students flock to this area.

South Brisbane

Situated a quick hop across the river from QUT Gardens Point campus, South Brisbane blends urban convenience with waterside charm. Centred around the South Bank, this celebrated arts and cultural scene stretches all along the river front, and includes Queensland greats such as the Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) and the Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). Paired with the iconic Streets Beach, and the Brisbane Ferris wheel, it’s not hard to see why this area is regarded as the city’s playground – for adults and children alike! Cycling fans can pick up the Bicentennial Bikeway from Goodwill Bridge that runs alongside the river for easy connections to the western suburbs.

Woolloongabba

This inner-city suburb is situated just 3km southeast of the CBD, and is known for its rich heritage and slightly retro vibe. Blending residential, commercial and recreational benefits, Woolloongabba is also home to The Gabba – Brisbane’s iconic and hallowed cricket ground, and the holy grail for all cricket-loving Australians. Well-connected to the city, and just a few kilometres out from QUT’s Gardens Point campus, Woolloongabba is a great choice for students wanting to save bit of cash without missing out on the delights of city living. By night, the suburb comes alive along Logan Road, a former antique precinct that now houses some of the best eateries in the area. Tucked away in some striking heritage buildings, here you’ll find pubs and speakeasys rubbing shoulders with wine bars and restaurants. If you’ve ever fancied a secret garden bar, or chowing down in a converted tram, this particular eat street is definitely for you. If you prefer culture without chaos, Woolloongabba makes for a perfect living choice.

Built around the Kelvin Grove Urban Village with its cafés, shops and weekly markets, this student-focused community has a relaxed and friendly vibe that makes it incredibly easy to settle into student living. Located just 3km from the CBD buzz, Kelvin Grove is well positioned for students to get out and explore the city and surrounding suburbs such as nearby Fortitude Valley, a popular nightspot. There’s plenty of green space for recreation and exercise, and regular buses will get you into the city in less than 15 minutes. Added bonus – the North Brisbane Bikeway will take you safely to QUT Gardens Point along protected pathways within 20 minutes.
