  • Hi Mazvita! What are you studying?

    Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering

  • Why did you choose to study in Australia?

After considering other countries like Canada and the United States, I ultimately decided to move to Australia. In my research, I found that Australia is one of the top countries for studying engineering, offering quality education and research opportunities Although Zimbabwe boasts of a good education system in Southern Africa, I believe as a country we are still lagging behind the first world in some fields such as biomedical engineering, which l hope to take in the future for my masters

  • Why did you choose to study in Brisbane?

I chose Brisbane as it is known for its vibrant, multicultural atmosphere, making it an excellent place for international students like me. The city has affordable living costs and is well-regarded for being safe, clean, and friendly. Additionally, Brisbane enjoys a subtropical climate with warm weather for most of the year, which is quite similar to that of Zimbabwe, making it the perfect home away from home.

  • Why did you choose to live at Iglu?

I loved that it offers breakfast, which would be very convenient considering how busy university can get. I also like the opportunity to interact with other students through events. Its central location is another big advantage, with easy access to grocery stores, shopping centres, and other essentials. It is also very close to uni, making it just a few steps away.

  • What is your favourite thing about being a student?

My favourite thing about being a student is the opportunity to grow both academically and personally, while meeting people from different backgrounds and building meaningful connections. I also love being able to visit new places and explore Brisbane.

  • What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?

l like to go hiking with my friends or just catch up on some sleep

  • What is your favourite thing about being a Resident Leader (RL)?

My favourite thing about being a Resident Leader is being able to make a positive impact on others’ experiences, supporting them and helping make their time more enjoyable and less stressful. I’ve also had the opportunity to make new friends and build genuine connections with residents. At the same time, the role has helped me grow personally by developing my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • What’s your go-to spot for studying or relaxing at Iglu?

    The ground floor desk area

  • Describe your favourite thing about Iglu?

It’s such a warm environment and everyone from the staff to residents is extremely kind and accommodating.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see myself having completed my degree and hopefully pursuing a master’s while working in Australia. I hope to be gaining valuable industry experience, building my career, and continuing to grow both professionally and personally. I want to keep building meaningful connections, exploring new opportunities, and experiencing more of what Australia has to offer, both in my career and in everyday life.

  • What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?

This is mainly for international students, especially those who have moved alone for the first time and don’t have a strong support system yet. It will be okay. It may feel daunting and scary, and at times you might feel like you can’t do it, but keep pushing, it does get better. Try to go out, meet people, and experience everything Australia has to offer, but also learn to be comfortable in your own company. Remember your goals and everything you’re working towards. In time, you will find your people and truly start to enjoy life to the fullest.
