The Iglu Guide | Blog

Bella M.

  • Hi Bella! What are you studying?

    Psychology

  • Why did you choose to study in Melbourne?

I was drawn to Melbourne’s walkability and how everything is connected. I also love the city’s ‘cool’ vibe- there’s always something happening, whether it’s live music, hidden cafés, or cultural events, which makes it an exciting place to live and study.

  • Why did you choose to live at Iglu?

I chose to live at Iglu Melbourne City because it’s the perfect mix of community and convenience. I wanted to meet new people, and Iglu makes that easy while also being in a great location. Its central spot helps me experience everything that drew me to Melbourne in the first place—its walkability, accessibility, and vibrant city life.

  • What is your favourite thing about being a student?

My favourite thing about being a student is the freedom to explore and grow. I get to learn about subjects that challenge me, meet new people, and try new experiences, all while having the flexibility to shape my own path.

  • What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?

I enjoy spending my free time with friends, whether we’re out exploring the city or just hanging out. It’s a great way to recharge and take a break from studying.

  • As an Iglu Regional Scholarship recipient, how did the scholarship help you?

The regional scholarship was incredibly helpful in easing my transition to university life in the city. It allowed me to focus more on adjusting to city living. It also provided me with a sense of belonging, especially through Iglu, where I felt acknowledged for the challenges regional students often face.

  • So you’re a Resident Leader. What’s your favourite thing about being an RL?

It would have to be that I get to connect with others. I enjoy hearing people’s stories, learning about events they’d like, and getting creative with event ideas and posters to build excitement. It’s a role that allows me to combine my enthusiasm for communication and creativity.

  • What’s your go-to spot for studying or relaxing at Iglu?

I love the outdoor areas at Iglu Melbourne City. They’re perfect for stepping outside when the weather’s nice, to get some fresh air. It’s a great way to take a break from studying and recharge.

  • What is your favourite thing about Iglu?

It would be how Iglu provides a strong foundation for making friends and enhancing the uni experience. I’d also say that having free coffee Monday to Friday is a fantastic bonus for a coffee lover like me.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

    Hopefully getting my Honours!

  • What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?

Everyone moving into Iglu feels the same way, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. I know it’s easier said than done, but starting with a simple “hello” to the Resident Leader can help—they can introduce you to more people and make it easier to settle in!
