LEARN MOREAbout the University of Sydney
Sydney University is Australia’s very first university and is widely regarded as one of the best in the world. Founded in 1850 on firm principles of progressive thinking and breaking with convention, the university was some 30 years ahead of Oxford University when in 1881 they admitted their first cohort of female students. Ranked in the world’s top 50 as well as 2nd in Australia, Sydney Uni is one of the original sandstone universities, a member of the Group of Eight and part of the Worldwide Universities Network alliance. This group of 22 research-intensive universities across the world is committed to combatting global issues through collaboration and partnership. The University of Sydney is strongly driven by the spirit of leadership, and the notion of developing future leaders in order to improve the world around. It has produced many distinguished alumni including seven Prime Ministers, two Governor Generals and four Chief Justices. An enduring university spirit of philanthropy and humanity leads many students into rewarding fields such as the UN and human rights law. Knowledge and learning are never limited to today, and USyd students are continually encouraged to strive, explore, create and imagine. Differences and opinions are nurtured and encouraged, seen to strengthen outcomes and lead to collective success. The university has four value clusters to inspire students: courage and creativity, respect and integrity, diversity and inclusion, openness and engagement. With a stunning Tudor-inspired quadrangle at the centre of the main campus, Sydney University is unsurprisingly ranked as one of the most beautiful universities in the world.
The facilities
The University of Sydney has five faculties (Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Engineering, Medicine and Science) as well as three university schools (Architecture, Planning and Design, Music and Law). The main Camperdown campus spans across 72 hectares and is the central hub of university life. Additionally, the University has multiple teaching and research satellite locations from The Conservatorium of Music in the city, to Health Sciences at the Cumberland Campus and Veterinary Sciences out at Camden. The faculty of Science even extends up to Queensland with the One Tree Island Research Station. The only research station licensed for teaching and learning on the Great Barrier Reef, it has helped facilitate numerous breakthroughs in climate change as well as established key marine observations. There is a fantastic and comprehensive library consisting of 11 individual buildings that together comprise the University offering. It is the largest in the southern hemisphere and is officially mandated to hold a copy of every published book in NSW.
Transport and access
The University of Sydney is a keen advocate of sustainability and although some campuses do have parking available, students are fully encouraged to use public transport, travel by bike or go on foot. Options are many and varied with Redfern station and Iglu Redfern just 10 minutes’ walk away from the main Camperdown campus. Just over 1km away Central Station and Iglu Central Park, Iglu Broadway and Iglu Central are easily reached on foot or by bike. You can also choose to immerse yourself in some cool local neighbours at Iglu Mascot, Iglu Summer Hill or Iglu Chatswood, but still enjoy excellent access to campus. Cumberland Campus is accessed by train and bus (from Lidcombe station) with a free shuttle bus operating during term time between the campus and the station. The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is located nearby to Circular Quay, and has good access to ferries, buses and trams.
