Best student spots in Flagstaff Gardens

Nestled at the northern end of the CBD, Flagstaff Gardens is perfectly positioned for students to enjoy all that Melbourne has to offer. But if your feet aren’t up for travel, there’s plenty to keep you amused right here on your doorstep. Here’s what you should know.
1. Queen Victoria Market
A stalwart of the Melbourne scene, you’re not really a true local unless you’ve earned your stripes and bought some fresh produce from Queen Victoria Market. One of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks, the market opened her doors back in 1878 and has been hustling for trade ever since. Today, you’ll find artisan foods, delicious coffee, street food and fresh food as well as clothes, books and souvenirs. Book in for a foodie tour, check out the night markets, celebrate the humble Durian or catch some live music. There’s a surprising amount going on with a rotating line-up of action on offer – the perfect place for students to sit back and while away a sunny weekend.
2. Explore Chinatown
Just a couple of blocks over from Flagstaff Gardens, you can step through the tell-tale red gates and transport yourself to the heart of Australia’s oldest Chinatown. Here you’ll find endless fun, from karaoke and fashion right through to cocktails and yum cha. From street food to fine dining there is something to suit everyone’s budget including students. Immerse yourself in the history of the streets at the Museum of Chinese History, and wander through the buildings on Little Bourke Street to discover the story of the Chinese migrants as they settled at this staging post during the gold rush. This rich heritage underpins Australia’s multicultural aesthetic as the longest continuous Chinese settlement in the Western world and remains a hugely popular tourist destination.
3. Flagstaff Gardens
This gentle hilltop was used as a signalling system for many years, and was the place where the great bonfire was lit back in 1850 to communicate news of Victoria’s separation from NSW. Today, it is a well-maintained public garden that features a range of native plants, trees and shrubs as well as recreational activities. If you fancy a stroll, a game of tennis or simply need some fresh air, look no further than right outside your door. A veritable oasis in the heart of the city, this slice of greenery is a serene escape from city living offering shade, seating and sports on tap. Conveniently close, you can use it for your daily exercise, an alfresco picnic or a study buddy session with friends.
4. Marvel Stadium
One of Australia’s leading multi-purpose venues, the stadium opened in 2000 and has since welcomed over 42 million fans to some of the biggest international sporting events or concerts in the world. Think AFL finals, Soccer World Cup, Ruby Union and more. Think AC/DC, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Eminem – right in the heart of this vibrant city. Even better, it’s connected by a pedestrian footbridge directly to Southern Cross Station. But for those lucky students that live nearby, home is just a ten minute stroll away at the end of a memorable evening. Find out what’s coming your way right here.
5. The Comic’s Lounge
Check out Melbourne’s biggest and best comedy club just a ten-minute stroll from your room and enjoy some of the best stand-up comedy shows in the city. Usually headlined by a TV or radio personality, you’ll get to watch around seven comedians on stage each night as they take time out from the comedy festival circuit. Come for the laughs, and stay for the delicious pub menu. With burgers, pizza and bar snacks on offer all night long, it’s the perfect student venue with friends.
