Retail rapture at Iglu Redfern

Iglu Redfern retail outlets showing huxtaburger and RaRa Redfern close to USYD

Not only is Redfern one of the hippest Sydney suburbs for students to call home, it also boasts a whole new injection of retail heaven that has landed right on the steps of our very own Iglu Redfern student accommodation.

If you’re into juices that help save the planet, burgers to die for, artisan noodle creations, profound food love or maybe a little organic baked treat for after lectures, life has never been more convenient for the lucky people who call Redfern home.

When you feel like stepping outside to sample the great outdoors, here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect to find so far.

RaRa Redfern

Proudly pioneering Japanese soul food, this is one eating-place where you can lovingly linger over the artisan noodle creations, a result of top-secret recipes handed down by ramen masters. Sample the Tonkotsu broth, painstakingly cooked for 14 hours containing only water, garlic and pork bones, or the signature ramen dish topped with a delicious roasted pork. Set in a cool modern twist, and packed from the minute it opens each day, RaRa is already destined for Redfern greatness.

Melbourne’s most popular burger hangout has identified Redfern as the perfect location to launch their sister restaurant. Targeting the progressive and contemporary crowds that permeate the area, Huxtaburger will not disappoint. Inspired by the local train station, the graffiti design and monochrome interior will certainly bring a competitive edge to the fast food marketplace– and as a happy by-product serves up the most delicious patty to ever grace the insides of a burger bun.

Such is the immense popularity of this unimposing corner bakery, it’s no surprise that the early bird wins out. Serving up a mouth-watering range of organic goodies from sourdoughs and pies to tarts and fondants, as well as boasting over 20 gluten free options, this really is a bakery that leaves no man behind. Arrive early, take your freshly baked goods and retire to the nearby park at your leisure.

Das Juice

Committed to saving ugly fruit from an untimely end (and happily helping the planet along the way) the team at Das Juice have successfully converted waste, in to taste. These clever people source the produce destined for landfill sites and redirect them to better use – where their delicious taste is not judged by a critical eye. And anything left over heads straight to compost. Assimilating well in to the Redfern culture, Das Juice is challenging consumer behaviour – and turning out some rather delicious drinks at the same time.

Bistro Saigon Kitchen

The newest kid on the block – Bistro Saigon Kitchen – brings yet another delicious offering to the precinct with the very best Vietnamese street food. According to Bistro Saigon, the sharing of a meal is “Profound Love” and there is much to love about the menu at this cool kitchen. All of your taste sensation Vietnamese favourites are here – phở, bún, cơm, mì xào, bánh xèo and gỏi. Pick your favourite, grab a table inside or outside and enjoy some “Profound Love” of food.

Why is Redfern so hot right now?

Situated just 3km from the CBD, this self-contained collective is characterised by an eclectic array of hip hangouts, contemporary retailers and stylish eateries, with new outlets that continue to emerge and flourish day by day.

Benefitting from excellent access to transport – Redfern is the closest station to Sydney University – students can enjoy the city in minutes or explore neighbouring suburbs like Darlinghurst and Surry Hills. For students that like their finger on the city pulse, Redfern is one hotspot to firmly keep your eye on and Iglu Redfern is at the heart of it.
