About UNSW

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was established in 1949 with a strong focus on scientific, technological and professional disciplines. A member of the Group of Eight, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and Universitas 21, UNSW is self-styled as Australia’s Global University – and the only Australian representation in the Global Alliance of Technological Universities.

Underpinned by the fundamental pillars of academic excellence, innovation, engagement and social impact, UNSW is attended by over 59,000 students from over 130 countries and offers international exchange and research partnerships with over 200 universities worldwide. The university is committed to pioneering research with a focus on areas that are critical to the future: sustainability, lifesaving medical treatments and technological advancement. With one of the country’s largest research communities UNSW has an international reputation to match. Nurturing strong engagements through research and industry, as well as a broad range of quality learning opportunities are key aspects of the UNSW tertiary experience. Students are encouraged to enhance their learning through independent travel, exchange programs, internships or volunteering.

As a leading provider of cutting-edge research and innovation, UNSW is the number one institution attended by Australian start-up founders and the proud educator of the first indigenous judge, Bob Bellear. The university continually works alongside schools to support the transition to university and engages with both primary and high school students through competitions and events.

The facilities

Home to nine different faculties, the main university campus spans some 38 hectares at Kensington close to the city centre. Art and Design is taught from the Paddington campus with a further satellite campus in Canberra housing the Australian Defence Force Academy. In line with a huge focus on innovation and entrepreneurial skills, the recent Michael Crouch Innovation Centre caters for all budding start-up ideas. Complete with three different specialised labs, students are able to design, experiment and build guided by visionaries as well as corporate partners. Additionally, UNSW has several purpose-built research facilities, theatre and music venues and is home to one of Australia’s major research libraries with extensive resources.

Transport and access

Both city campuses are easily accessible by transport. The Kensington campus is just 20 mins from Central Station – and by extension, Iglu Central, Iglu Broadway and Iglu Central Park – with express buses running regularly. Iglu Redfern is also an easy bike ride or bus away. Once at Central Station, you can take a direct train to Iglu Chatswood, Iglu Mascot or Iglu Summer Hill. The light rail runs services from Circular Quay and UNSW runs a regular shuttle service between the Kensington campus and the Paddington campus.
