Summer in Brisbane 2016

group of students in summer

Christmas is coming, the atmosphere is hotting up and school is out for summer. Take a look around – you’re in one of the best spots to enjoy an awesome holiday!

Whether you’re happiest chilling beachside, losing yourself in festivals, or spotting comedy stars of the future, summertime Brizzy has something for everyone.

The city is the place to be to get the festive cheer started – check out Queensland’s largest eco Christmas tree in St George Square complete with a whopping 16,000 pedal-powered lights! With daily parades and performances all themed around The Nutcracker, the best part is it won’t cost you a cent. The festive fun continues over at Southbank with daily Christmas markets featuring delicious goodies and gift options for you and yours. And when you’ve had enough of all that shopping – not forgetting the brand-new H&M and Zara to perfect your summer wardrobe – what better way to embrace the yuletide fun than one of Brizzy’s famous rooftop bars?

Boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year it is no surprise that these venues are popping up all over town. Schooner with a view? Check. Cocktail with a spa? Got it. Beer with a DJ? Not a problem. Yep, these high-tops are your summer hangout friends. Don’t miss Elixirand Limes in Fortitude Valley for some expertly handled cocktails and boutique beers as well as movies, spas and tunes. Then head on over to hot newcomer Soleil in South Brisbane for your summer Sunday wind-down session. Not a bad life this student lark…

For all you festival lovers, fear not. Brisbane will not disappoint. Whether it’s rock, pop or electronics that gets you moving, Brizzy has it covered. Stereosonic lands for just two days in December featuring the best in electronic sounds including Peking Duck and Hot Dub Time Machine; St Jerome’s Laneway Festival arrives in Feb 2016 showcasing fresh new acts, leaving plenty of time to rock out to The Prodigy and Public Enemy at the unmissable Soundwave later in January.

But what is life without laughter? Fortunately, we won’t need to find out. Brisbane’s Comedy Festival returns to The Powerhouse in 2016 (Feb 27-March 3) with a stonking must-see line-up confirmed featuring both Australian and International acts. Comedy greats Anne ‘Eddo’ Edmonds and Cam Knight as well as Danny McGinlay and Damian Callinan are all there to have you wiping your eyes and rolling in the aisles. For those that love a laugh but lack the loot, head over to Stones Corner Hotel for free comedy nights every Sunday from 6.30pm as well as a great burger and beer deal for just $15. That’s no joke.

Summer in Brizzy is all about enjoying the great outdoors. Hop in the car and enjoy the best of Australia with unrivalled access to beautiful beaches, biking, camping and exploring. And for those who prefer to watch others get active, get yourself down to The Gabba to cheer on the Aussies against India on Jan 15. No cricket season is complete without the Big Bash League (fixtures at The Gabba between Dec 19-Jan 14), or simply cosy up with your mates and watch the tennis champs slug it out at The Brisbane International 2016 Jan 3-10. Ace.

With all this on your doorstep, your biggest challenge this summer will be finding time to study!
