Demira L.

  • Hi Demira! What are you studying?

Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)(Hons) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance)

  • Why did you choose to study in Sydney?

I chose to study in Sydney because I’ve always associated the city with big dreams and endless possibilities. Growing up, I visited Sydney quite often and was drawn to its vibrant energy, diversity, and pace of life. It always felt like a place where anything could happen. Over time, that connection grew stronger, and I set my sights on studying here, not just because it’s home to one of Australia’s top universities, but because I knew it would challenge me and support my personal and academic growth. For me, Sydney represents ambition, opportunity, and the kind of environment where I can really push myself to become the person I want to be.

  • Why did you choose to live at Iglu?

My brother lived in Iglu, so I was introduced to it early on. Over the years, I grew to love the building, the location, and the overall vibe of the place, it just had this great energy and sense of community. So when it was finally my turn to start university, I already had my heart set on Iglu. It felt like the perfect place to begin my own journey, in a space that felt familiar but also full of new possibilities.

  • What is your favourite thing about being a student?

My favourite thing about being a student is the constant opportunity to grow, both academically and personally. It’s a unique time in life where you’re encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and challenge yourself. I also really enjoy being part of a community where everyone is working towards their goals; it’s inspiring and motivating. Right now, I’m living some of my childhood dreams, and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful for where I am and the journey I’m on. Some personal achievements I’m proud of is running two half marathons (hopefully more soon!) and securing a role at a Tier 1 Company!

  • What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?

I love taking short trips outside the city when I get the chance, whether it’s a coastal town, a national park, or just a random spot I’ve never heard of. It’s my way of staying curious and connected to everything around me.

  • So you’re a Resident Leader. What’s your favourite thing about being an RL?

My favourite thing about being a Resident Leader is the opportunity to be a behind-the-scenes connector. It’s rewarding to see how small actions, like a friendly check-in or organising an event, can make someone’s day better and create lasting bonds.

  • What’s your go-to spot for studying or relaxing at Iglu?

My go-to spot at Iglu is the flexi space. It’s really quiet, has charging ports, and enough study seats for when I need to focus. It’s the perfect place to get work done without distractions, and I also like that it feels calm enough to relax and recharge when I need a break.

  • Describe your favourite thing about Iglu?

My favourite thing about Iglu is definitely the events. They’re such a great way to explore new places and try activities that would be harder to do alone. One of my favourite events was the alpaca visit, where I got to feed and touch alpacas, it was such a fun and unique experience! These events create memories that go beyond just living here.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I see myself having grown both professionally and personally. I hope to be working as a successful engineer in a role that challenges me and aligns with my passions, ideally in a dynamic environment where I can make a real impact. I want to look back and know that I took meaningful steps toward the goals and dreams I’m building today.

  • What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?

You don’t always get to be a student, so live your life fully, even if it means doing things alone or feeling scared sometimes. Iglu is not just a place to live, but a community where you can grow, make friends, and create memories that’ll last a lifetime. Also, remember to find your own balance between work and fun, both are important for a great uni experience!
