Why did you choose to study in Brisbane?
I wanted to move away from my regional home and experience a city lifestyle. I enjoy fast paced environments and wanted new opportunities.Why did you choose to live at Iglu?
My sister stayed at one of the Iglu properties before so I knew it would be a good place to live while I studied at uni. -
What is your favourite thing about being a student?
Getting to try and learn lots of new things! I love the student lifestyle and through uni and Iglu I’ve been able to make amazing friends! -
What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?
I love spending quality time with my friends and going out to explore what Brisbane has to offer. I also enjoy dancing with my uni club in my spare time. -
As an Iglu Regional Scholarship recipient, how did the scholarship help you?
It definitely made the process of relocating to the city much more achievable. -
So you're a Resident Leader. What's your favourite thing about being an RL?
Getting to meet and talk to so many new people from diverse backgrounds. I’m an extrovert so getting to know people is right up my alley! My biggest goal in life is to make authentic connections with people. -
What is your favourite thing about Iglu?
Iglu feels like home. The staff have made me feel so welcome in my time here. I’ve made my closest friends in Iglu and I’m so grateful for this safe space where I can live my uni years. -
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I find it difficult to predict the future since I have so many aspirations haha! But wherever I am in the world I see myself surrounded by friends and working towards my goals. -
What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?
Get involved in the community events as it is a great opportunity to meet new people - this is where I made most of my close friends!

Why did you choose to study in Brisbane?
I have some family and high school friends here. Also, I was excited to explore the depths of the city on my own! -
Why did you choose to live at Iglu?
To be close to the night life, the day life, you name it! Everything happens here in the cbd, everything is a quick walk away. The museums, performing arts centre, World Science Festival, walk trails, bike trails, restaurants, gardens. There are endless things to do with the new friends I expected to make at Iglu! And friends I indeed made! -
What is your favourite thing about being a student?
Probably the fact my hunger for learning is always fed! -
What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?
Eating. That or simply exploring the city with some good company. -
As an Iglu Regional Scholarship recipient, how did the scholarship help you?
It really helped aid my financials while I was dealing with big big life stresses like family health and moving away from home! It genuinely made my move possible in the first place so I'll forever be grateful for it. It really was the extra fuel to help kick-start my fantastic future here in the city, immersed in UQ life. -
So you're a Resident Leader. What's your favourite thing about being an RL?
Oh man, where to begin. First of all, the workplace is so close to home in more ways than one. Not only do I have an easy walk to work every shift, but also my coworkers feel like friends and family too me! And then the residents, getting to know them at events, what their passions are and where they're from is always an absolute joy for me. They make the job so enjoyable, becoming RL genuinely felt like winning a prize! -
What is your favourite thing about Iglu?
I could say the breakfasts we get here, but I'm gonna have to say the people I've met along the way always win. -
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully as a humanitarian! I major in Peace and Conflict studies so I sure hope my degree is my gateway to make that dream come true! -
What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?
Don't feel rushed to fill your pin board. Let it slowly grow over time from all the memories you make. I am certain by the end of your stay, it should be full of photos and mementos.

Hi Aaqil! What are you studying?
Bachelor of Science. Major in Coastal and Ocean Science, Minor in Earth Science. -
Why did you choose to study in Australia?
I went to an Australian university fair in Singapore, where I looked for schools offering marine science majors. And I applied to a few Australian Universities and eventually decided on studying at UQ. -
Why did you choose to study in Brisbane?
The university suited my needs and preferences the best! -
Why did you choose to live at Iglu?
Student accommodation, as recommended to me by the university website seemed the best option for me, as apposed to colleges or share houses. Having looked at a handful of student accommodation options, Iglu's website was the easiest to use and most informative. The location of Iglu Brisbane City appealed to me, being in the city, near both the city and other areas like South Bank. Transport to university is also relatively convenient. -
What is your favourite thing about being a student?
Meeting new people in university and getting new experiences in a field I have not previously had much exposure to. -
What is your favourite thing to do when you are not studying?
Making and drinking coffee, spending time with people, playing games on my phone, watching Youtube and sports like F1. -
So you're a Resident Leader. What's your favourite thing about being an RL?
Being able to meet and help other residents in Iglu only upgrades my experience living in Iglu. I think it is a key part of what has made my time spent living in Iglu as enjoyable as it has been. -
What is your favourite thing about Iglu?
The staff here are extremely warm and welcoming, which might not be what you expect from a student accommodation, but it has proved to be one of the biggest positives of being an Iglu resident. The events are a great way to meet new people, it is especially good if you are moving somewhere where you may not know anyone yet. -
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
After graduating from university, I would like to be as involved with the outdoors as possible, especially the ocean. Being a dive instructor or working at one of Queensland's many marine parks would be a dream. -
What words of wisdom would you pass on to future Iglu residents?
Make the most of the many offerings Iglu has to give you. Attend as many events as you can, get to know the staff and other residents. Many of my closest friends in Australia have been made through these events. As an international student I think this is extremely helpful and has made moving to a new country so much easier, and more fun.
